FLY TYERS BENCH
Let's get one thing straight off the bat: I'm not a fly-tyer. Every time I see a video on tying by an expert or watch a buddy whip up a few tarpon flies I'm amazed at my ignorance. Nevertheless, I have picked up a few things, and have experimented heavily within my specialized niche - wade fishing for bonefish, permit, and tarpon. My flies are for fishing, period. They won't win any awards or beauty contests. What they will do is catch fish.
Let's be honest, most flies down at the ol' flyshop are for catching anglers, not fish. We seem to find all the flash, doo-dads and bright colors irresistable; the fish probably couldn't care less. I remember watching a guide in Islamorada crank out tarpon flies - about 1 a minute. No painted eyes, no epoxy head. "Fishin' flies", he called em. About 2 days later he jumped 17 tarpon on those flies.
So, here is little of search for simplicity at the vise. I might still freak out on the latest gadget or own reels that are way to good, but hopefully my flies will always just be fishing flies. Enjoy.

THE SIMPLE SHRIMP - BONEFISH FLY
A simple bonefish fly that has taken many fish for my clients recently. The pattern is based on Brian O'Keefe's Bonefish Turd, while the coloration and materials are inspired by Vaverka's Mantis Shrimp.
