CAYMAN SALTWATER FLIES
Recommended Patterns
Need flies? Here are the flies that work... without all that guessing at the flyshop. Of course, there are other flies that work as well, but these are a few of my favorites for flyfishing in the Cayman Islands. There are flies here for bonefish, tarpon, jacks, cudas, and snappers. (Note that almost all the bonefish flies have weed guards.)
Borski's Bonefish Critter
Great for tailing bonefish over grassy flats or beach-side bones. Imitates the small crabs bones love. Fish with a strip-and-stop retrieve. Bonefish hit on the "stop".
Hook: #6 - #4 Saltwater
Thread: 6/0 Chartreuse
Weight: Med. Beach-chain - Small Lead Dumbell
Eyes: Burnt 20 lb. mono
Mouth: Orange Crystal Chenille
Legs: Ginger Hackle (long and webby)
Body: Wool (olive or tan)
Weed Guard: Single prong 20 lb. mono
Margarita Clouser
A good pattern for deeper water and mudding bonefish or casting around the reefs for jacks and snappers.
Hook: #6 - #2 Saltwater
Thread: 6/0 Chartreuse
Eyes: Mini - Small Lead Dumbell
Flash: Gold & Pearl Flashabou
Wing: Pink & Chartreuse Bucktail
O'Keefe's Bonefish Turd
This fly is a smart choice for picky bones when any stripping action seems to spook them. The marabou tail seems alive even when the fly is still. If you move it at all use tiny twitches.
Hook: #8 - #4 Saltwater
Thread: 6/0 Tan
Eyes: Small - Med. Beach-chain (Brass)
Flash: Pearl Flashabou
Wing: Marabou (Tan or Ginger)
Body: Dubbed Wool or Craft-Fur underfur (Tan)
Weed Guard: Single prong 20 lb. Mono
The Usual
My own variation on Vaverka's Mantis Shrimp, the name should say it all. Fish with foot-long, slow, steady pulls for cruising bonefish, or cast close to tailers and barely twitch.
Hook: #8 - #4 2x-Long Saltwater
Thread: 6/0 Rust or Tan
Weight: Small - Med. Beach-chain (brass)
Eyes: Burnt 20 lb. Mono
Mouth: Bunny Fur (Nat.)
Legs: Silli-Legs (Pumpkin)
Wing: Craft Fur (Tan)
Body: Dubbed Craft-Fur underfur (Tan)
Weed Guard: Single prong 20 lb. mono
Notes: I can't imagine you'll find this little number in stores, but it's an easy tie. The secret is the Craft Fur which has body but no bouyancy, so the fly lands quietly but sinks quickly -- an important quality for any bonefish fly.
Meko's Special
A buggy, shrimpy looking pattern that's good for fishing over mixed bottom. A good Bahamas fly that happily works well on Caymanian bonefish too.
Hook: #8 - #4 Saltwater
Thread: 6/0 Gotcha Pink
Eyes: Small - Med. Beach-chain (brass)
Flash: Gold Flashabou
Wing: Craft Furn (Tan)
Body: Leech Yarn (Sand) & Palmered Hackle (Ginger)
Weed Guard: Single prong 20 lb. Mono
The Gotcha
Arguably the most popular bonefish fly of contemporary fly fishing. This fly is flashy, sinks fast, and has a profile that bonefish love. Good for slightly deeper water and sandy bottom.
Hook: #8 - #4 Saltwater
Thread: 6/0 Gotcha Pink
Eyes: Small - Med. Beach-chain (Chrome)
Tail: Mylar Tubing (Pearl)
Flash: Pearl Flashabou
Wing: Craft Fur (Tan or Blond)
Body: Pearl Sparkle Braid
Red Devil
A great little tarpon fly, especially over grassy bottom. Also good for early dawn and dusk fishing.
Hook: #1/0 Saltwater
Thread: 6/0 Black
Wing: Grizzly Hackle (Red)
Flash: Gold Flashabou
Collar: Squirel Tail (Black/Red)
Borski's Tarpon Shrimp
Here's a sweet clear-water tarpon fly that's super easy to tie. Try a darker version with a weed-guard for tossing against the mangroves or bright green for cudas.
Hook: #1/0 Saltwater
Thread: 6/0 White or Pink
Wing: Craft Fur (Pink or Tan)
Flash: Pearl Flashabou
Collar: Palmered Grizzly Hackle (Nat.)
Body: Crystal Chenille (Pearl)
Barring: Permanent Marker (Gray or Brown)
